Abstract

Introduction: Cerebral Palsy (C.P.) is characterized by a group of non-progressive disorders of the muscle tone, posture and movement, resulting from brain injuries that occur in the brain still developing in the fetal, perinatal or postnatal period. One of the therapeutic approaches for individuals with C.P. is equine-assisted therapy, commonly known as Hippotherapy. Objective: To analyze the therapeutic effects of Hippotherapy on postural balance, spasticity and body symmetry of children with C.P. Material and Methods: This is a systematic review study, addressed according to the PRISMA methodology. Articles classified as controlled clinical trials were searched in the PEDro, PubMed, LILACS, MEDLINE and CENTRAL databases. The articles were evaluated for their methodological quality using the PEDro scale. Results: Eight articles were included for analysis with a total sample of 310 children with cerebral palsy who were or were not submitted to a Hippotherapy protocol. The general average score, resulting from the evaluation of the quality of the studies, was 5.75. All the eight studies analyzed showed beneficial results from therapeutic sessions of Hippotherapy in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy, for at least one of the variables evaluated. Conclusion: The Hippotherapy results can produce positive and relevant effects on postural balance, spasticity and body symmetry in children with cerebral palsy and, therefore, can be considered as an effective approach in the treatment of these patients.
