Abstract

Introduction: Obese individuals awaiting bariatric surgery may present behavioral alterations, such as dietary restriction, emotional eating, and binge eating. These aspects are commonly evaluated by the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-18), and they may be influenced by socio-demographic and socioeconomic variables, such as unemployment. Objective: To verify if there is a relation between the alimentary behavior aspects, measured by the TFEQ-18, and the occupational condition of obese individuals. Methods: The sample consisted of 522 individuals of both genders, aged 18 to 65 years, with Body Mass Index ≥ 40 Kg/m2 or ≥ 35 Kg/m² with comorbidities, who are awaiting bariatric surgery in the public Unified Health System. The sociodemographic questionnaire and the TFEQ-18 were applied as well as the current weight and height of the patients were measured. A descriptive analysis of the variables was performed and the characteristics between groups were measured using the independent t test for continuous variables and the chi-square test for categorical variables. The t-test was also performed to analyze the TFEQ-18 items among the patient groups according to the occupational situation. Results: The sample consisted of 434 women and 88 men, with an average age of 39.1 ± 10.7 years. From the 522 patients evaluated, 267 were on the active group and 255 on the non-active group. Most of the patients showed health problems, were sedentary and were married or in stable union. Only the variables age and socioeconomic stratum showed significant differences between the groups (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between groups in relation to food behavior aspects. Conclusion: The occupational condition did not influence the evaluated the eating behaviors of patients awaiting bariatric surgery by the public health system.
