Introduction: Premature babies are biologically more vulnerable than babies born at term due to their organic immaturity, requiring special care right at birth. Massage therapy in premature babies has had positive effects on their global development. Objective: To review in the current literature the studies on the effects of massage therapy in premature babies. Methods: Integrative literature review of randomized clinical trials that used massage in preterm infants. MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) databases were searched for studies published from 2008 to 2019, using the descriptors: "preterm", "massage in premature", "infant massage" and their equivalents in Portuguese. Results: Thirty-nine studies have filled out the eligibility criteria; totaling 4.883 participants. The major findings were weight gain (51.3%), decreased length of staying and consequent decrease in hospital expenses (16.2%), and decreased stress hormones (13.5%). Other findings were also found such as: improvement in cognitive/motor development, skin hydration, sleep, bone mining, among others. Conclusion: Massage can provide stability to the premature baby. Family members can also be trained to perform the massage, strengthening the bond between them. The oil massage is effective, moreover, when associated to tactile and kinesthetic massage, and the pressure should be moderate.
