Abstract

Introduction: The patients have been affected by COVID-19 are susceptible to secondary bacterial infections with consequent clinical impact and death. Objective: Analysis of the literature in respect to the bacterial profile, bacterial resistance and the main secondary infections in adult patients with COVID-19. Method:  An integrative review of the literature conducted in March 2021 in LILACS, BDENF, IBECS and MEDLINE databases via the Virtual Health Library portal, including original publications and case reports available in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Results:  Of the 162 articles found; 18 were included in the research. Of these, 10 (55.6%) reported antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus aureus and in Klebsiella pneumoniae. Eleven and 10 Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were isolated, respectively. In a total, 550 secondary infections were identified, mainly respiratory infections reported in 11 articles (61.1%), followed by hematological infections in 7 productions (38.9%). Conclusion:  It was observed that patients hospitalized for COVID-19 are vulnerable to the occurrence of secondary infections as well as colonization by multidrug-resistant bacteria, mainly Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
